At Outside Edge Theatre Company, we believe that creativity can play a vital role in recovery. Our person-centred approach has proven impact, with 91% of participants saying that OETC strengthens their recovery.

Our free, peer-led drama activities are designed to reduce isolation, improve wellbeing and inspire optimism, hope and joy. Working from an asset-based approach, we empower participants to build healthy habits and discover their strengths, all while promoting the Five Ways to Wellbeing: be active, connect, take notice, keep learning and give.

By improving wellbeing, which is the foundation for recovery, and engaging in OETC’s arts-based interventions, participants develop coping strategies, learn to make positive behavioural changes and build Recovery Capital—the internal and external resources needed to prevent relapse and maintain their recovery:

  1. Reduce social isolation and loneliness.
  2. Improve mental and physical health.
  3. Strengthen financial resilience (employment, housing, etc).
  4. Encourage community integration and de-stigmatise recovery.

For more information on how we do what we do, please see our Theory of Change.

Our weekly arts activities are open and inclusive, offering everyone a chance to reclaim the centre stage in their own lives. Alongside creative expression, we provide one-to-one Pastoral Care Support and empower participants to choose their own path with OETC through our Participation Pathways. Whether it’s progressing from drop-in sessions to advanced actor training or joining in social events like Theatre Club and summer BBQs, our holistic approach offers a supportive environment for growth. We also provide Volunteer and Employment Activities, such as peer mentoring and paid acting work, allowing participants to gain valuable experience and give back to their community.
