John Gordon-Smith, who was instrumental in setting up Outside Edge Theatre Company with Phil and Catherine Fox, and who was Outside Edge’s first Chair and served on our Board of Trustees for 21 years, sadly passed away on December 3rd 2025, after a long illness.
“I feel very privileged to have worked with John as a Trustee and Chair, and I know that many of you will also feel the same. John had an unwavering commitment to enable service users, especially those in his local community in Hammersmith and Fulham, to live their best lives, and his work with Outside Edge transcended the fact that he self-professed to not really being ‘a theatre guy’. He was a wonderfully supportive, caring and passionate man who I will miss dearly, and Outside Edge would not be what it is today without the time, hard work and expertise that he offered us during his 21 years on the Board.” —Matt Steinberg, Artistic Director and CEO of Outside Edge Theatre Company
“John introduced me to Phil Fox and Outside Edge at the beginning of my recovery from substance misuse. John knew the benefits of drama, especially in the early stages of recovery, and boy was he right on that one! His support for myself and lots of others was so encouraging.” —Liam, Service User Representative of Outside Edge Theatre Company

Everyone at Outside Edge is grateful for everything that John did to help create and sustain the company. For more information on John’s life or to leave a tribute, please follow the link below.
